Srila Giri Maharaja – In Memoriam of “That Gentleman.”

Saturday night my next younger brother (Gary) called to inform me that a gentleman known as ‘our father’ had passed away that evening at the age of 97. When I tried to turn the subject to the spiritual implications of the event he closed that door declaring “I don’t want to discuss religion.” That is his prerogative. Mine is to open the discussion to those who are inclined to have it. I do so herein.

While no one can be compelled to discuss the spiritual implications of death, no one can avoid the event. Srila Sridhara Maharaja several times referred to these lines of Thomas Gray to illustrate the point:

?The boast of heraldry, the pomp of power,
And all that beauty, all that Read More...

Srila Giri Maharaja – “A guru should not adopt the thinking of his disciples.”

Srila Govinda Maharaja once said to me, dismissive of something one of his disciples was thinking, “What does a disciple know?”

The spiritual master is worshiped with these words:

nikuñja-yūno rati-keli-siddhyai
yā yālibhir yuktir apekṣaṇīyā
tatrāti-dākṣyād ati-vallabhasya
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam

“The spiritual master is very dear, because he is expert in assisting the gopis, who at different times make different tasteful arrangements for the perfection of Radha-Krsna’s conjugal loving affairs within the groves of Vrndavana. I offer my most humble obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.”

At the request of Srila Bhakti Kanan Giri Maharaja I recently posted an article by Sriman Jagadananda dasa Adhikari entitled “Correction and Instruction”.
I asked Srila Giri Maharaja if I could also post his Holiness’s reply to his disciple concerning the submission for publication of this article.
I received this reply –

Dear Sriman Uddharan dasa Adhikari,

Please accept my humble dandavat pranamas.

| May I post this reply to your disciple and If so what title should I use?

Srila Sridhara Maharaja has given the answer to your question.

?Yes, one who has got that, he may do. He may publish, I have no objection. Dhira Krishna Maharaja or something like, he also asked me, ?May we Read More...

Sriman Jagadananda dasa Adhikari – “Correction and Instruction”

All glories to my guru, Srila B.K. Giri Maharaja and my param gurus Srila Govinda Maharaja, Srila Sridhara Maharaja and Srila Swami Maharaja.

On our journey toward Krishna Consciousness, we are bound to take some wrong turns. New situations arise daily and old habits are sometimes seemingly impossible to break. Simply put, we will make mistakes. None of us are perfect. But what we must remember is that with every mistake comes an opportunity. The opportunity to learn, mature and grow.

Our guru is a strict father. But a loving father. We are his spiritual children. And like all children we want to run, jump, and play without restriction. We become distracted by shiny objects and glimmering lights. From time to time, our guru may observe our behavior and find Read More...

Srila Giri Maharaja – “Forgetfulness—and Remembrance.”

Recently I heard this supposed poem, that contains no noticeable elements of a poem (or, if present, escaped my attention) such as meter, rhythm or rhyme:

Forgetfulness
        by Billy Collins

The name of the author is the first to go
followed obediently by the title, the plot,
the heartbreaking conclusion, the entire novel
which suddenly becomes one you have never read, never even heard of,

as if, one by one, the memories you used to harbor
decided to retire to the southern hemisphere of the brain,
to a little fishing village where there are no phones.

Long ago you kissed the names of the nine muses goodbye
and watched the quadratic equation pack its bag,
and even now as you memorize the order of the planets,
