On the Gaura Pratipat day, during the month of Keshava, Gaurabda 495 (Friday, November 27, 1981), Srila Giri Maharaja received sannyasa diksha from His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Rakshaka Sridhara Deva Goswami Maharaja. Giri Maharaja was the first westerner to approach Srila Sridhara Maharaja for sannyasa diksha and be accepted by him as his sannyasa disciple.
Prior to receiving sannyasa diksha Srila Sridhara Maharaja asked the then Kanupriya dasa brahmachari (a twice initiated disciple of Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja) “Are you prepared to go alone in the world?” and then “Can you preach to women?” Kanupriya dasa answered in the affirmative to both questions and his sannyasa initiation took place the next day.
The event occurred that year, according to the Sun calendar, on the Friday after the last Thursday of the month of November.

Dear Srila Giri Maharaja,
I offer my humble obeisances unto you, your Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Kanan Giri Maharaja, who is very dear to Lord Krsna, having taken shelter of His lotus feet.
All glories to our param gurus Srila Govinda Maharaja, Srila Sridhara Maharaja and Srila Swami Maharaja. All glories to you and wishing you a very happy Sannyasa day!
There are many days throughout the year which I hold very dear, and even many more I desire more than any to be in your immediate association. And this is one of them. I can only pray that someday soon we can all be together.
You have taught me so much since I took shelter at your lotus feet. I am very grateful and incredibly fortunate that Krishna sent you as my spiritual master.
There are many sentiments I wish to express about this day. So much so it becomes overwhelming. We, your spiritual children here in the Philippines, just want to wish you a very happy Sannyasa day.
I pray no offense was committed in this letter.
Forever in your service,
Jagadananda dasa, Malini devi dasi, Siddharta and Lily Ann
Dear Sriman Jagadananda dasa, Srimati Malini Devi dasi, Sriman Siddharta and Srimati Lily Ann,
Please accept my blessings and well-wishes.
Your email below is greatly appreciated by me. It is an auspicious reminder of the significance of my receiving sannyasa from His Divine Grace Srila Sridhara Maharaja and the mercy bestowed upon my humble self by your param gurus. They are exceedingly merciful to all and you can expect their kindness and grace towards you to exceed my own, as the grandparents are even more generous than the parents towards their children.
I pray you are all keeping well and this finds each of you in good health and spirits.
Swami B.K. Giri
